Web of life [Book Blurb Friday #17]


“Your future will be determined by the number thirteen, by one man whose name begins with B and by another whose name begins with A.   Choose wisely, child, the wrong choice will be fatal.”   Thus spake the gypsy fortune-teller to thirteen year-old Rathlin.

Thirteen years later Rathlin married Bruce Carrick, who, to ‘celebrate’ their thirteenth wedding anniversary - ‘lace’ for a marriage now as sadly shredded as a frosted web - has arranged a ‘murder mystery weekend’ at Bannockburn Castle.

Rathlin has good reason to believe that Bruce might succeed in bringing about her ‘accidental’ death on this occasion, his six previous attempts having failed, but which, if any, of guests Aidan (neighbouring farmer), Andy (best friend’s ex-husband), Amos (out-of-place artist at local Summer School) or Alexander (colleague of Bruce) is destined to be her saviour?   Who should she trust not only with her life but with her secrets too?

Each week Lisa posts a photograph which represents a book cover.   Participants are challenged to “Write a book jacket blurb (150 words or less) so enticing that potential readers would feel compelled to buy the book”

    I'd have to read the book just to find out why Rathlin stays with a guy who keeps trying to kill her!

    Sioux - I didn't do anything, it's hoar frost caused by the web having got damp overnight (mist - called 'sea fret' up here - or overnight condensation) then freezing at dawn.

    Clever... I'd have made the castle start with A too - just to add to the confusion. Sounds very Jonathan Coe. He's not a bad model to work from!

    I'm in agreement with those above - why does she stay? That is very compelling. I'm assuming money (sigh!). That usually does it every time. This sounds like a great mystery/thriller, and there could be "A" romance, also!

    All the bones of a great novel in this, Sandra...I was intrigued from the beginning! All your details wove this easily into a whole piece that asks to be expanded upon.

    And I really like your photo. I remember wonderful hoar frost patterns when I lived in Ontario, but here in rainy Vancouver, frost is something of a rarity...:)

    A psychological thriller. Boy howdy this will be a page turner. With a darkened room...and sounds that come from the walls. I just know it!

    I was just saying to my daughter how I don't like the number 13 (I'm the 13th blurb link on Lisa's site-ooh...)
    What a great start to a chiller thriller-but I also want to know how she knows her husband has attempted to kill her before and why is she still around? Very interesting...

    Oooo ... I can see this foretelling will turn out to be a tangled web all of its own! I'm sure Raithlin stays because she has no proof that the accidents were really murder attempts and not just her imagination. But is Bruce the villain and will one of the A's be the saviour or the dark horse?

    I guess I will have to read it!
