Something to hang on to.

Howard Jacobson, at this week's Hay festival: "The author has an obligation to please the reader, but the reader has an obligation to be intelligent."

  1. I think I disagree with both halves of that statement. The author has no obligation to the reader at all. To the story, yes. But not to the reader.

    You can't write to please everyone - so look after the plot and the characters. Let the readers look after themselves.
