The scream was truly operatic, the tremendous splash less so. Both were witnessed by Rose Madigan, adventure-prone journalist, who had seen, from behind her tinted sunglasses, the now floundering, spluttering female whose face she recognised as that of Italy’s best known soprano, being forcibly propelled into the swimming-pool by a slight but determined auburn-haired woman in her mid-thirties.
While others had rushed to the aid of the immersed, Rose had gone to stand beside the aggressor who, quietly voluble in her triumph, told her that Carmellina Contralta was not only a ‘scheming, double-crossing, adulterous bitch’ but also a thief and a blackmailer and thoroughly deserving of the drowning she was too obviously not going to suffer on this occasion.
Intrigued - and bored after two days’ sunbathing - Rose befriends Alicia and becomes embroiled in an investigation whose life- and sanity-threatening intricacies rival the most wickedly convoluted of opera plots.

This is week #9’s response to Lisa Ricard Claro’s Book Blurb Friday challenge and Christina Claro’s intriguing photograph. Each week Lisa posts a photograph which represents a book cover. Participants are challenged to “Write a book jacket blurb (150 words or less) so enticing that potential readers would feel compelled to buy the book”

I like how we already know who the killer is but now why. I'd love to know how Carmellina and Alicia are linked. Nice cover, too!
ReplyDeleteGrace
Aha, Grace - but can you really be sure who the killer is?? And even whether there is a killer?
ReplyDeleteNice! That would be fun to read. I think Rose Madigan has great potential.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like great fun. It made me chuckle. Your first line is a stunner! penny
ReplyDeleteOMG. I love what you've done with the cover - very clever. The blurb is brilliant, too!

Those divas can be a handful - hope Alicia can help Rose solve the mystery, or is Alicia really telling the truth?
ReplyDeleteDitto on what Ellie said, and also that I really think this is superb. Do you really have a Rose Madigan series? I'd love to read them all, and that's no joke.
ReplyDeleteKathy M.
Ooooo, I like this! But, can I assume that Alicia is the auburn-haired aggressor? Can't wait to see the book!

Thank you so much ladies - I have to say Rose Madigan came to me out of the blue but she will be carefully put into my 'possibilities' file just in case I feel the need to (the possibility of)take her further. I think all these plot based whodunnits are way beyond my capabilities
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, Alicia is the auburn-haired aggressor
Sandra, the blurb alone is a delightful read! You have masterfully provided insight into each character, so stepping into the novel would be a lovely continuation. I agree you should definitely hold on to this for future possibilities.
ReplyDeletePlease drop by my blog for a cuppa and a chat so I can pass on an award.
ReplyDeleteI like how I wasn't entirely sure who the bad guy--uh, girl--was by the end! Your blurbs always have such great little details to them!
ReplyDeleteLove the title and the blurb!
ReplyDeleteThis was wonderful Sandra, and I think its the best blurb you've done since we started this meme! Time to write it?
ReplyDeleteGreat work -- and CONGRATS on reaching your Write1Sub1 goals this month!
ReplyDeleteLove the way you turned the photo into a book cover! And I'm intrigued by anyone who would calmly go and stand beside the aggressor. Hmm.

I love the twist and the way you've carried the operatic theme throughout your blurb. Hope we'll be seeing lots more of Rose.
ReplyDeleteOn a different note, I have a self hosted Wordpress blog and you don't offer a Name/Url option as a profile choice. The Wordpress option only works for those hosted through Wordpress. That leaves me without a way to have my profile directly connected to my blog. Any chance that you could add the Name/Url option that so many blogs have?
Grandma's Groulash
Thank you all - when I have finished my current novel I may just turn to Rose for rescue.
ReplyDeleteGrandma: being pretty thick when it comes to technology (and I see that you are NOT) are you simply asking me to follow you or is there something else I am supposed to do? - sorry!
