To base a lusty, loving blue-eyed hero
upon a man known mostly just by sight,
watched for from a bedroom window,
teenage-dreamed about,
imaginary conversations
(and some more)
is not (as Tom Jones would say) unusual.
But I never imagined then
that getting on for half a century later
I’d Google-find a photo of him
and discover that my hero had become
white-haired, pot-bellied,
six inches shorter ... and so old.
Oh this is just fantastic. Its so economic and to the point and the point made me laugh aloud. Penny
ReplyDeleteThanks Penny, I have to say it didn't make me laugh, except somewhat ruefully ...
ReplyDeleteI love this.
ReplyDeleteI was recently contacted by someone from my old home town because of something I put on a (history) website that I run. It took me a while to work out who he was because I remember a REALLY good looking, tall, sexy bloke who was WAY out of my league at 17. He's changed.
(Incidentally, it was his - 1970s - face that I put on Sean when I read Theme for a Summer............)
The really odd thing about 'Sean' was that he was out of my league - ten years older - and not at all good-looking, which is another reason to be entirely puzzled as to why he's stuck around in my head for so long ...
