Thickness of Thieves - Book Blurb Friday

“It’s easy enough to look dumb, but acting that stupid is really difficult!”

Seconded, for the sake of anonymity, into Luke Darbyshere’s team, and masquerading as a minimally-educated chambermaid in one of the city’s supposedly top rank hotels, Francesca Lloyd - renamed ‘Chelsy’ for the duration – had reported her discovery of an entire wing on the fifteenth floor, whose unnumbered rooms are never officially occupied by any guest but frequently have people staying in them.

She is unsurprised to be told that her next task is to get herself allocated to the team which has the responsibility for cleaning them.

What does startle, and subsequently terrify her, is the recognition of one of the occupants, the realisation of exactly who his fellow conspirators are, and her eventual understanding of the nature and implications of the task they have set themselves.

This is my week #4 response to Lisa Ricard Claro’s Book Blurb Friday challenge.   Each week Lisa posts a photograph which represents a book cover.   Participants are challenged to “Write a book jacket blurb (150 words or less) so enticing that potential readers would feel compelled to buy the book”    Reading the varied responses is highly entertaining.

  1. I love the way you've written this blurb. The opening quote is a hook straight away and now I want to ead the whole story AND know who Luke Derbyshere is! Excellent!

  2. Wonderful blurb! You have opened up a conspiracy of some sort, but I'm also interested in learning more about those investigating. Very well done!

Thanks for playing BBF, and thanks for posting the badge. I appreciate it!

  4. Yeah, you have piqued my interest. This plot could go places that Bruce willis has been.

  5. I agree with Margo. The opening line got me right off the bat.

Your story idea took me to an unexpected place...definitely a place I did not imagine when I looked at the photographic prompt. (But that is what is so cool about this meme: seeing what others "see" in the picture.)

I want to read this book!

  7. Thank you all for your comments - I have to admit I looked at this photo and thought I'd be giving this one a miss ... but then ...
Luke Darbyshere evolved from a Thinking Ten prompt; his first appearance at

and appearing intermittently thereafter ... he seemed like someone to hang on to!

  8. This is a very creative piece of work and yes, it does cause the reader to want more, would sell a book for sure, I think.

  9. Love this! Reminds me of my beloved Tana French and her Cassie Maddox (circa her undercover days). And now I realize I can add in my own title to the cover -- thereby adding another element of fun.

  10. There's no doubt that there is a lot of talented writers out there. It's funny how when you first look at a picture you wonder how a story can develop and then... poof.

  15. I love this. Chelsy is a hilarious choice of name. And I think her challenge of 'acting that stupid' would create a fascinating storyline.
