It used to be that street lights demonstrated solidarity,
'All for one and one for all' - that kind of thing;
a thin strung orange line between the road and darkness,
separating safety and the blackmail of the night.
But now the trend is all for individuality:
the high-kick, tight-strung routine all abandoned.
Each now autonomous within its sphere of darkness,
extinguishing alone, when convinced of morning light.
