March: in normal years the pond is full.
All twenty plus frogs mated and spawned.
Rarely is the surface empty, rarely are the evenings quiet.
Carousing, calling, froggies come lately. Pond-side stage-door johnnies panting.
Hoping against hope for even later females.
I like the idea of the frogs as stage door johnnies, and am trying to imagine them panting ;)
ReplyDeleteWas a bit unsure that 'johnnies' wouldn't be misconstrued - and no I don't know if frogs pant in real life ...but if they can, then is when they will.
